The Entitlement Mindset

Posted by CL Stegall on Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Who do these people think they are that they presume they know more what you want than you do? Or, better yet: those people who presume to know better what you NEED than you, yourself.
All these crankspankers who want to tell us what to eat, what to wear, what to listen to and even [...]

Rain

I remember, growing up, standing out on the hill by my grandparents’ home and watching the rain coming down on the freshly-plowed field across the road. That smell of fresh-turned sod and rain has always held a strange feeling of comfort for me.
I joined the Army back in 1984 and headed off to New [...]

Welcome

Simple has escaped me over the years. I imagine it has for many other than just me. Life is difficult, no doubt about it; welcome to the real world. Right? Well, here, I throw the real world out the frickin’ window and abide by my own rules and principles. This is my space to [...]

Progress - Progeny

Posted by CL Stegall on Friday, August 15th, 2008

I began writing my first novel about a year ago. I had had plans to start the novel (seriously writing, not just jotting notes down) for at least a year prior to that. Foolish me, I thought it would be simple enough to take the short story I had written (and won a writing contest with), expand it and turn it into a full-fledged novel.

Silly me.

I’ve not been nearly as productive as I expected to be. Life gets in the way, you know. Priorities shift. Focus fades. Sad as it may be, I have been (and still am) struggling with finding the time to just sit down and write. The words are there and the tale is waiting to be told; yet, it sits patiently, quietly awaiting my hands and mind to come together with that fleeting bastard ‘time’.

I decided to take it down a slightly different path, in order to get the full story down in one form or another: I am story-boarding. I’m taking each scene/chapter and writing it down in only a few key sentences and then, once I’ve completed all of that, I will order everything and flesh it all out.

I’ve heard several other writer friends of mine rave about this process, and at this point I am willing to try anything. So far, it seems to be working pretty well. At least I am making progress. At about 40,000 words, it sucks to get bogged down!

Wish me luck!

It's not pinin,' it's passed on! This parrot is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! This is a late parrot! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed him to the perch he would be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolical processes are of interest only to historians! It's hopped the twig! It's shuffled off this mortal coil! It's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible! This.... is an EX-PARROT!
