One band lives in the books. One band lives in my office. Both of them are real enough to play.
The Ash Brown Band is the house band at The Heaven Room, and their record exists because I wrote it. The Plot is the demo project that got there first. Everything here is free to play, in any order you like.
The Ash Brown Band
Gothic Americana out of San Diego. Fifteen tracks of muscular, shadow-draped songwriting that feel less like songs than confessions the band had no choice but to make.

Heathen’s Gospel
These are not hymns for the faithful. They are testimony from those who stayed standing when the church emptied out.
Written and recorded over eight months in a converted storage facility outside San Diego, by two people who met arguing about Townes Van Zandt on a back porch in October of 2022 and never quite stopped. Songs from the edge of the field, just past the fence line, where faith and fury trade places and the night has its own gospel to preach.

Known to everyone as KD. Two decades of military service behind him, and a baritone that sits somewhere between a late-night radio preacher and a man who stopped talking to God but never quite stopped listening for an answer.

Demi Brown
Co-founder, classical piano foundation, and the counterweight to KD's voice. Where his descends, hers climbs. People mistake the quiet for deference exactly once. She and KD married in the summer of 2025, mid-record, and told nobody.

Joker to the band, for reasons involving unattended instruments. KD's nephew, younger by fifteen years, and the reason the two projects on this page share a bloodline: he also plays in The Plot.

Where they come from
They are the house band at The Heaven Room.
The Ash Brown Band belongs to the Valensi Chronicles. They play Jessica Light's club, and if you have read the books you already know what kind of room that is and what walks through it after closing. The album is real. You are listening to it. The band is a story you can hear before you read it.
Their first appearance in print comes in Salt and Silver, the upcoming Valensi novella, set in 2022. They are not a band yet at that point. Byrne walks in on two people playing together for the first or second time, months before anyone gives it a name, and nobody in the room knows they are watching a beginning.
What happens to them after that gets carried forward. The rise, the record, the marriage nobody announced, whatever comes next. It runs as a quieter timeline underneath the supernatural one.

The Plot
A fictional band, and everything it has recorded is real.
Same preoccupations as the books, three hundred pages shorter. I write about people who all believe they are the reasonable one, and then I write songs about the moment they find out otherwise. Sorrow Road and Heavy with August would fit inside a Valensi chapter without much sanding.
All songs written by C.L. Stegall, and most of the melodies start with me as well, humming into a phone until the shape holds.
The digital music is created using Suno. Some songs were trained on my own voice and sound enough like me that my own sister was convinced she was hearing me sing. Each track is then pulled down, broken into stems, and cleaned up as much as I can manage.
Even so, these are demos. None of it is for sale and none of it is going to be. I make them because I enjoy making them. If a track sticks with you, the books are the place to go next.
