Valensi maintain strict secrecy about their existence. The Masquerade is the unwritten law that governs all Valensi activity—break it, and face swift judgment from the Hierarchy. In the digital age, maintaining this ancient secret has never been more challenging.
Ancient bloodlines rule Valensi society through various means: Magistrate (senior member of the Hierarchy), Hierarchy (Valensi High Council), Protectors (assassins who guard the secrecy of the Valensi as well as serving as very harsh police, at times), High Guard (a groupd of highly trained bodyguards who serve the Magistrate), and Umbral (secret keepers). Each group possesses unique abilities and philosophies, leading to constant political maneuvering and occasional open warfare.
Creating a new Valensi is a sacred and dangerous act. The Birthing requires Council approval and a bond between maker and progeny that lasts centuries. Rogue birthings are punishable by final death — for both the maker and the turned.
Not all humans are ignorant of Valensi. Hawthorn has tracked, policed, and eliminated Valensi for millennia, using ancient knowledge and modern technology. They are relentless, resourceful, and increasingly dangerous as technology evolves.
Some Valensi can develop strong paranormal abilities: everything from enhanced hearing or smell to full-on mind control. These abilities are treated as gifts and those who display such abilities are specifically trained to build on said abilities. Although, truth be told, not all Valensi use their gifts for good.
Eight ancient Valensi form the Council, with the Magistrate governing Valensi law and settling disputes between parties. Their word is absolute, their justice swift, and their methods often brutal. Cross the Hierarchy, and you may wish for final death.
